A trip to Tartessus from the Protohistory Room of the Badajoz Archeological Museum

The Protohistory Room of the Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Badajoz (Badajoz Provincial Archaeological Museum) takes you on a journey to Tartessus through an exceptional virtual and immersive experience. Opened in May 2025, after a comprehensive renovation of the museum that cost a million euros, it is now one of the most attractive and modern museums of Spain.  More than five hundred visitors attended during the opening weekend, showing their interest and warm welcome.

The Faces of Turuñuelo is the Jewel of the Crown

The 400 archeological pieces of Tartessian culture recovered at the sites of Medellín, La Mata de Campanario, Cancho Roano in Zalamea de la Serena, and Oliva in Mérida, as well as in some twenty other towns in Extremadura, are an important attraction. This civilization, which lived in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula during the Bronze and Iron Ages, left its mark clearly in this region, so much so that one of the major international archaeological events in 2023 was the discovery of the first Tartessian faces at the El Turuñuelo de Guareña site.

The news of the discovery spread around the world; the masks were restored and displayed at the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid, from where they have returned home to the Archaeological Museum of Badajoz, becoming their most important exhibit, the jewel of the crown.

Accessible, virtual, and interactive

The original faces are on display for sight only, but a reproduction of one of faces allows you to touch it—an attractive proposal that makes the Protohistory Room a tiflological display which is accessible for people that are visually impaired. QR codes and audiovisual resources projected on the floor, ceiling, and walls make the visit accessible to all.

An Excellent Touristic Resource for the Whole Family

The Protohistory Room houses everyday utensils, such as vases; earrings and other jewelry, marble sculptures or tablets with the Tartessian alphabet. Pieces that attest to the advanced civilization that gave a significant boost to agriculture, trade and writing.

This new tourist resource is a must-see on any visit to Extremadura. Ideal for the whole family due to its valuable educational nature, interest and attractiveness.

The entrance free of any charge and open to the public:  Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; Sundays and holidays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
