Travelers who search for nature experiences during autumn 2016 have a real gold mine at Sierra de Gata. Voyages in the clouds aboard hot -air balloons or river journeys to the sleeping places of cranes, or trips on four wheel drive vehicles for people with reduced mobility, or tours looking for gold nuggets like an old gold panner, or walks through ancient forests, or routes guided by the rhythm of traditional musical instruments, or geocaching routes are just some of the more than forty activities planned for the weekends from late October to November. Also, not to be missed are the dining experiences at Sierra de Gata, where Olive Oil tastings and fresh mycological feasts are typical for this time of the year at the Extremadura region. Visitors may also enjoy the Tapa – Bus, a tour aboard a comfortable bus through magnificent scenery and beautiful little villages, to enjoy typical Tapas without having to worry about driving.
There is a whole range of activities free of charge, for all ages, organized by the “Direccion General de Turismo de Extremadura” (the General Tourist Board of Extremadura) to promote the destination “Sierra de Gata”. The official slogan of the program is “Echate a soñar” (Lie down and dream) as visitors can plan the sort of escapade that is more suitable with their time and interests. More information is available to the public on their Website: www.elotoño.com . Information can also be obtained through social media: Face book, Twitter and Instagram. This is a Sierra de Gata, which has been updated to spread the news and announce it is a heaven for ecotourism. An activity that is so much in vogue and can be truly enjoyed due to the lush vegetation of the region, a real treat for the senses.
There are more than enough reasons to set sail to the region of northern Extremadura, which is west of Madrid and close to bordering Portugal. Explore roads and enjoy sceneries that are breathtakingly beautiful, numerous cultural corners, facades of interesting designs and even places that have a local, unique, language: “A Fala”. All seasoned with tourist activities that seek the emotional involvement of the traveler.
Explore rivers inhabited by cranes on tandem-kayaks
To watch the cranes that live in the Borbollón Reservoir during autumn is a total ecological proposal. You may approach the birds on a tandem-kayak and contemplate their sleeping places next to cormorants and ducks. An ornithological wealth is captured in this second edition of the Touristic Campaign of Extremadura by creating this novel program of river navigation for bird watchers. Visitors are equipped with binoculars to insure the sightings. This activity is ideal for the entire family.
Navigate across the clouds of Sierra de Gata on a hot-air ballon
Another novelty this year is to experience Sierra de Gata landmarks from high above the clouds. To navigate across the clouds in a captive hot-air balloon is a unique way to enjoy the sights offered by autumn.
Accessible trails with four wheel drive vehicles to discover Sierra de gata
Also, novel for this year are the special routes designed for people with reduced mobility that otherwise could not enjoy this wonderful season in the out –doors. Aboard vehicles with four wheel traction people can now visit enchanted places in Sierra de Gata, such as “La Cervigona” one among the essential cascades of the North of Extremadura. Another place worth visiting is “Chorrito de los Angeles” at Descargamaria. This route will allow visitors to travel from the most innovative natural pool in Extremadura to the place where Black Vultures live.
The gold rush returns to Sierra de Gata
The most important novelties of a program that combines new guided tours with musical experiences, legends, concerts at magical places and shows with magicians directed to children and other attractions that increase their sense of curiosity. These important novelties are combined with activities and successful programs designed for previous seasons, such as the Extremadura Gold Rush. Here participants turn into a gold panner searching for gold nuggets, in fun excursions, at places that are close to bordering Portugal. We will also enjoy this year the new itineraries of geocaching in search of the treasures of Sierra de Gata.
Art Routes at Sierra de Gata
A modern compliment to the nature escapades to the Sierra de Gata is an urban route to towns that display murals by artist Chefo Bravo, with motives related to the 2016 touristic promotional campaign. Also, a travelling exhibition will fill Sierra de Gata with cats. These are the creation of local artist Angel Hernandez, inspired by Wain, who has featured elements and scenes that are characteristic to this region.
